Singers have found fame acting in movies after being sought out by directors and film producers who wanted a big name to attract more viewers.
Many singers began their acting careers on television in the past few years.
The Co Gai Xau Xi (The Ugly Girl) film broadcast on VTV features popular singers like Minh Thuan, Thu Minh and Mai Thanh.
The movie A Cappella included the men in the AC&M Group, and Nu Hon Than Chet (Hot Kiss) featured singers Phuong Thanh, Duc Tuan and Thuy Tien.
Early this month, Phuoc Sang Film invited singer Siu Black to play the role of a shrewish errant woman whose job is to sell women in Huyen Thoai Bat Tu (The Immortal Legend).
Singer Ngo Thanh Van has become popular after appearing in Chanh Tin Film's Dong Mau Anh Hung (The Rebel).
Van is expected to play the role of a knight errant in Lua Phat (Buddhist Fire), which will be shot in October.
Many singers believe that television and cinema offer the best platform for promotion, especially in rural areas.
Of the 3,000 singers in Hcm city fewer than 100 are well-known. New singers with limited experience have not been able to enter the highly competitive field.
In the last few years, singers have found more opportunity in films because of a shortage of actors and actresses.
Film director Vu Ngoc Dang said casting a role was difficult and the most important thing was to find the right person for the right part. Whether the actors are well trained or not is not necessary.
Dang said singers make more than VND100 million (US$6,250) in a major starring role.
